Veeam Software is the leader in backup, recovery and data management solutions that deliver modern data protection. It's a privately held, U.S. information technology company with a U.S.-based leadership team.
Founded in 2006, Veeam focuses on simplifying backups for virtual machines and continues to charge forward to innovate the industry so you can own, control and protect your data anywhere in the hybrid multi-cloud.
Veeam software is used for a variety of use cases and encompasses a wide range of solutions that deliver:
- IT Monitoring & Analytics
- Off-site backup and recovery
- Backup Modernization
- Ransomware Protection
- Hybrid Cloud Acceleration
- Data Security & Compliance
- Data Reuse, and
- Disaster Recovery Orchestration.
Veeam licenses software in a variety of ways depending on the specific product and use case required. This includes licensing by the number of protected workloads, by user, orchestrated instance or older per-socket options.
With Probax MSP Backup, Veeam partners can opt for All-In-One bundled plans which includes all required Veeam licenses, or BYO plans where they bring their existing Veeam agreements and bring their own licenses.

A Veeam rental license, known as a Rental Veeam Backup & Replication license is a full license with the license expiration date set according to the chosen rental program, which is normally from 1 to 12 months from the date of issue, that can be automatically updated upon expiration.
Veeam Instance Licensing (VIL) is a flexible licensing solution from Veeam that's designed to be portable. It can be used to protect different workloads throughout various Veeam products. A Veeam instance license can be used for public cloud and on-premises backups.
The subscription pricing for the Veeam instance license is similar to other Veeam products.
A Veeam Universal License (VUL) is a workload license that keeps all of your workloads protected, including hybrid, on-premises, and multi-cloud environments. The licensing is flexible, providing portability across workloads. This makes it easier to protect and restore your backups without having to deal with extra fees or appliance lock-ins.
When a Veeam license expires, there are multiple scenarios depending on the type of license:
- Paid licenses: Veeam Backup & Replication will be set to a grace period.
- Evaluation and NFR licenses: Workload processing will stop after the license expires.
- Promo license: With a Promo license, the granted instances will be removed, and workload processing will stop. There's no grace period, so once the primary license expires, the promo license will expire as well.
- Perpetual Socket and Perpetual Instance licenses: These don't expire, but there's an expiration date for support. The user should be informed about this date.
For licenses with a grace period, your data will remain protected, and none of your disaster recovery operations will be affected. Nevertheless, you'll be notified that your license has expired in the Veeam Backup & Replication console, and it won't renew unless action is taken from your side when you are ready to renew.
To ensure that your operations aren't affected, you must renew your license before the grace period. Once the grace period ends, workload processing will stop, but restoring data from existing backups will still be available.
The grace period is 30 days for subscription licenses and 60 days for rental licenses. Evaluation, NFR, and Promo licenses don't have a grace period. service.
